Robots are going to take over the world someday. All the science fiction films and novels that feature a bleak future where humanity is enslaved by machines through the use of military robots support this fact. You can either resist and die along with the millions that will be exterminated by the planet’s new overlords, or you can join the collaborators and get those cybernetic parts implanted in a hurry. Humans have always held a fascination for artificial beings. Throughout history, there have been many samples of such creatures in myths, folklore, and literature. The Greek god Hephaestus, for example, was said to have talking mechanical handmaidens made of gold that helped him out in his workshop. In Greek mythology, Galatea was a statue created by a sculptor named Pygmalion that came to life. Al-Jazari was an Arab inventor who made the first programmable humanoid robots in 1206. The robots were four musicians who were used to entertain guests during royal parties. Italian painter and inventor Leonardo da Vinci who lived during the Renaissance also sketched plans for a humanoid robot with the appearance of a knight that could make human-like motions, however, it is not known whether he actually tried to build it.

Although, several examples of mechanical beings had existed for centuries, the word “robot” itself only came into being in 1921 when the Czech writer Karel Capek introduced it to the public in his play “R.U.R.” (Rossum’s Universal Robots). His brother suggested the name roboti for the artificial people in the play, which meant work. Capek’s robots, though artificially created, were organic beings. They were similar to the modern concept of androids. However, the term “robot” is now more widely used to describe beings with mechanical components. There are now several types and classes of robots that exist. They are used for a variety of purposes in a wide range of fields. Robotics in reproductive medicine has made the process of childbirth safer for millions of women around the world. Others robots can be found in hospitals where they help doctors perform delicate surgical operations and minimise the risk of infection through the sterile and hygienic dispensation of pills and other medications to patients. Some large robots are utilized in factories where they manufacture or assemble products like cars and microchips. These robots ensure the quality of the products that they are able to manufacture with perfect precision.

There are also machines which are used by military units in modern warfare. These robots can eliminate targets even at great distances with amazing accuracy and a minimum loss of human lives. Robotics is one of the most exciting fields of scientific study in the modern age. By building robots which can mimic a greater range of human movement and behaviour, scientists are able to understand the way the human body works. Through the development of artificial intelligence, they are also able to comprehend some of the mysteries of human consciousness. In the near future, the use of robotics in space exploration will enable humans to spread out and learn more about the solar system and the rest of the galaxy. There is seemingly no end to the uses and benefits which robots can provide to the human race. So it would definitely be in our best interests to treat these thinking machines with all the respect that they deserve. Even if that one little computer that you ignore today is not going to be a gigantic vengeful war machine someday, it would not hurt to be nice to it anyway, just in case.
